ANCHOR: Newly sworn-in Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Afghan President
Hamid Karzai say they intend to work together to tackle rising militant
violence in both countries.
STORY: Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of former Pakistani prime minister
Benazir Bhutto, was sworn in as president on Tuesday. Allies and investors hope this will be a step towards stability after months of
uncertainty.

The new Pakistani president said that tackling surging militant
violence in the country was a priority, and reminded people he himself was
"a victim of terrorism."
President Karzai, meanwhile, welcomed a recent U.S. move to send
additional troops to Afghanistan, but said a sustained troop presence was not
a long-term solution.
[Hamid Karzai, Afghan President]: "For now, addition of troops to Afghanistan for the purpose of
fighting terrorism, as long as those troops are effectively fighting against
terrorism and effectively addressing the question of sanctuaries, is welcome.
But in the long term and as the only solution, it is the building of the
Afghan state institutions that matters, that should be done."

The United States is intensifying its efforts to kill militants in
Pakistan's ethnic Pashtun region on the Afghan border, while the militants are
responding with ever more deadly strikes in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Karzai reiterated his call to go after militants, whether they be in
Pakistan or Afghanistan, and for international forces to avoid civilian
casualties.

Karachi residents are simply wishing for some respite from soaring
prices.

[Muneer Ahmad, Salesman]: "He (Zardari) has been sworn-in. Now, we look forward to him doing
some good for the country. He should bring down prices."
[Tabish, resident of Karachi]: "Now, he should think about the price hike, about the people.
Unemployment is increasing day by day, electricity load-shedding is also
increasing. He should control all these things."
Investors and Pakistan's allies, led by the United States, hope the
election will bring some stability after months of political turmoil and
rising militant violence. The uncertainty has dragged stocks and the rupee
sharply lower.
