air cannon shooting water

Since I'm posting this for the CHDK folks I'd best talk about the camera first. This was shot with an A550, firmware version unknown. It is NOT using CHDK. (Hurry up and port it! ;) Or at least a hint...) The video from the A550 is 60p, and I think it is 320x240, perhaps smaller.

The air cannon uses only compressed air. It uses 4 1" diameter sprinkler valves to release the air in the reservoir all at once through the barrel, propelling whatever we've decided to stuff into it down range. It uses 2 10 foot sections of 3 inch diameter pvc as a reservoir, and has a 10 foot barrel which is 3 inches in diameter. Air pressures varied, topping at ~95 psi.

At the beginning we are just shooting a barrel full of water. Then we loaded it with several bad apples that had fallen from our apple tree. It fires at a much higher velocity because the apples weigh dramatically less than a barrel full of water. (Someone says "Holy shi-" for the first apple shot.)
We then tested it as a water balloon launcher, but it seemed to break them more often than not.
We then shot water at each other at increasing pressures. If you look closely you can see how it pushes them back.

why did you use sprinkler valves instead of solenoid operated diaphragm valves? The sprinkler valves open a lot slower causing the cannon to lack power vs the diaphragm valves which open fully in a split second?

we built one out of 8 foot sections of 4in and we found that if you make the ballons small REALLY small and then fill the barrel a tad with water. the water acts almost like a cusion and the ballons fly like theres no tomorrow
