July is a great time for tailing reds on the grassy, west side of the Lower Laguna Madre. We usually start there in the early morning, and then move onto the "sand" later in the day. In this video, I am guiding Doug and Connie Gaunt from Ft. Worth, who have fished with me for several years now. You will see the dramatic contrast between early west side fishing in the low morning breeze and fly fishing on the sand in 25 mph afternoon breeze. The Guants caught around 20 reds that day, and Connie hooked and lost an 8 lb. trout, as well. Come see me at www.lagunamadreflyfishing.com.

  • Thanks. I enjoy making them. Sorry to hear about your fishing luck. I don't mean to preach, but taking up fly fishing will force you shallower and clearer until all you do is sight cast. You will know the LLM like a hand full of people know her. You will be surprised how good the fishing is when you're a mile from the closest boat, in less than a foot of water. • what weight rod would you recommend and would you prefer a 4 piece or 2 piece?

  • what weight rod with you recommend?

  • I'm really looking forward to the shallower water. So I can experience something new, and get back to my wading roots. I got my start in fishing wading for years with my dad when I was a kid over by the convention center before the jet skis showed up and the fishing was still good. It was rare we didn't come back home with at least a couple trout. Once I'm decent enough at controling my fly rod and such I'll book a trip with you. -Carlos

  • Love your videos. I hope to get into Fly fishing sometime next year. The more technical/sight fishing aspect of it really intrigues me. This year has been real tough for me in the LLM as for most regular weekend fishermen I've talked to. Abnormally poor fishing, at least for us who do mostly blind casting. I haven't taken home any fish this year, besides some snappers over at the Port Isabel swing bridge. Thanks for the videos.
