Ok for all you kids too young to know better, guitar smashing started with Pete Townsend of The Who. Paul has smashed guitars since the beginning and, yes they are real. He throws them out to the audience.

the appeal of guitar-smashing lies in its very perversity. to this day i can't stop frm gasping in half-delight & half-horror to see a guitar get wreckd, even tho i suspect the smasher xchanges it with a cheapo beforehand. imho, it signifies the decadence & shamelessness of rock n roll. it's awesome & awful @ the same time. but u know u were waiting to see it. human beings r delightfully twisted creatures.
