The chief disadvantage I see is that it turns an unlimited business opportunity into a limited income position because you're restricted both by width and depth. Another thing about the matrix is that it attracts the welfare minded because of a concept called "spillover". In a 3 x 5 matrix, after you sponsor 3 into your frontline, the next person you sponsor spills over underneath one of your personally sponsored frontline. This means people come in expecting a downline to be built for them.
