From the legendary Bakersfield sessions in 1967. Vern and Rex Gosdin with Nashville West, which included Gene Parsons and Clarence White. Produced by Gary S. Paxton. For my money, this is the greatest country single of all-time. Let's hope when Bear Family finally gets around to picking up the Paxton masters, they select the final mix prior to single mastering, because this is also a brilliant use of compression and echo.

  • What do you mean "Bakersfield sessions"? It was not recorded in Bakersfield, and the label is a Hollywood label.

  • I mean specifically what I said. This was one of at least four sides released on the BAKERSFIELD Int'l label, as opposed to the slightly earlier EDICT releases, the later COLUMBIA release, and the simply awful CAPITOL re-release of this and other tracks done with it. As far as to where it was recorded, I have at least three conflicting stories about that, and I have been trying to get Mr. Paxton to reveal that for two decades, as well as the main processing used.

  • I even asked his nephew on here, earlier in the year. MY best guess is different...that it was cut at Gold Star and mastered and sweetened at Capitol. That's because neither Capitol nor Era ever came close to this compression. I did, at dozens of radio stations during this period, and still do with my custom processors. By the way, the audio (which YouTube doesn't handle well) on this video was pulled directly from my 1967 BI single, using all tube equipment and no EQ or processing.

  • mugwump790 ~ Gary S Paxton is my uncle!

  • I hope he's doing well. He created a good bit of magic, and this is not the least of it! My best to you and him! Could you ask him a question? Was the outstanding reverb done at the Capitol Tower? Thanks...

  • RIP Vern!!

  • Amen! I bet he and Rex had a lot of catching up to do...
