Time lapse photography of a 3D print on a Makerbot Replicator. This is my first print at .1mm layer height. There is a significant increase in detail compared to printing the same model at .2mm height. It takes longer, but in a print like this it is worth it. The layer ridges are still visible, but are much less evident.

.2mm is fine for general printing, including things such as brackets, toys, and iPhone docks. When you have a model with fine detail, give .1mm a try I think you will like it!

The 3D model can be found here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:14104

Thanks very much of answering my question. I have other question and maybe you can help me. I saw many videos that are made parts with movements. Watch this video: .com/watch?v=67cev_zcXJw - my doubt is: this part is printed ready, or they are printed separated and after they are put together? I can't understand how the printer does 2 separately parts.

Mating gears can be printed at the same time. The 3D printer has enough precision to leave a very small gap between the gears. This way the gears are not fused together, and are close enough to operate smoothly. I have printed something similar, go to Thingiverse and look up thing:53451. It is a planetary gear set that is printed in one pass. The first one I made was fused together, but a small adjustment and the gears turn smoothly with very little slop.

Hello man, how are you? Let me know... you said this print was made using 0.1mm layer. And it does more details than 0,2mm layer. Is it made by software? or you had changed de extrusor before printing???

    Thanks

    Carlos

Good question. It is the same exact file, with different options in the slicing software. Think of it as slicing an apple from the side. You can cut it in inch thick slices, or super thin slices. The software slices the STL file in layer heights set in the software. The same STL can be sliced at .1mm and then again at .2mm. Different results from the same input file, using the same exact printer, plastic, and extruder.

Material costs are reasonable, probably under $5 for Yoda. The printer is currently (May 2013) selling for $1999 direct from MakerBot. The true costs are also measured in time, both in machine time, and time to learn how to achieve consistent high quality prints. Thanks for the comments!

ABS plastic. It is fed from a spool behind the printer, and looks like thick colored fishing line.

Hard plastic, like Lego toy blocks. Lego is made of the same ABS plastic.

MakerBot is selling the Replicator 1 (the one I have) for $1999. The Replicator 2X (updated version) is $2799 on MakerBot's online store.
