Iraq War 2: U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division (M) Takes Baghdad by Sherman-Style Blitzkrieg 7/10

Continuing with "thunder runs", the 3rd ID (M) decides its time to stay in the west Baghdad city center, collapsing the Saddam regime.

The weakness of the Army's HBCT structure was exposed: wheeled resupply trucks were ambushed and set aflame along the roads they had to travel on; proof positive that we must switch to M113 Gavin-based XM1108 tracked resupply tanks that can deliver supplies cross-country and make better use of air-delivery:

Clearly, there is no way wheeled Humvee or LAV-III/Stryker trucks would have survived the intense Iraqi bullet and RPG fires to thunder run into Baghdad; we took Baghdad and won the nation-state Iraq war 2, only because the 3rd ID (M) was fully tracked and armored.

But where the hell are the marines?

Saddam and subordinates have escaped from their sector and wide-scale looting has broken out there...the 3rd ID (M) cannot do their job and the marine's...where are they?

WHAT?

They are stuck again and cannot cross the measly Diyalah river?

Thus, Iraq Nation-State War 2 ends but quickly degrades into a Sub-National Conflict (SNC) instead of a peace—primarily due to USMC incompetence that let Saddam and his subordinates to escape to start a rebellion against us. Adding to this, the Iraqi Army Soldiers that did as we requested and didn't fight---that we didn't bother to rehire to quickly restore order. In Grenada and Panama, we rehired the local Soldiers who chose to back a new government of the people, and by the people—and peace rapidly followed. In Iraq, we ousted Saddam to create an illegitimate government--by the American contractors and for the greedy contractors--to make Bush neocon favorites rich. Military bureaucrats also racketeered to expand their budgets and personnel end strengths by occupying Iraq with 158, 000 men/women in bloated FOBs running presence patrols in wheeled trucks full of light infantry narcissists--who don't have to do much beyond clean their rifle, do PT and eat chow. The rebellion grew in the face of this obnoxious U.S. presence and responds by blowing up the stupid Americans in their wheeled trucks with land mines.

My first section chief was in the initial push with 3rd ID. I was private in Korea then. I remember seeing his 3rd ID combat patch. Had and still have mad respect for him.

@str8up87 modern for 1970s-80s...the T72s were of export modifications, with steel-aluminium-steel armor plating, definately inferior to composite armor plating of the day - chobham in the west and steel-ceramic/reactive pockets-steel plating in USSR + reactive/dynamic armor tiles, none of witch saddams forces had. they might as well employed T55s. plus, many tanks were siting duds, with batteries removed apparently for illumination of the tank crew bunkers, as it was in '91.plus no night capab

I tolerated happosai27's remarks because its a common misconception that Iraq in 2003 was a push-over when had not the

3rd ID (M) been tracked, mechanized we'd have not have even reached Baghdad. The USMC 75% in wheeled trucks didn't until the Army collapsed the enemy first for them.
