"Letter to the World" by Shashi Light

I left the remote mountains of New Mexico summer of '07 to travel around the country, making music. I was in Austin, TX, one of my first stops, and wrote this song, parked off the side of Hamilton Pool Road, under a big beautiful tree.

She came down off the mountain in a cloud of aspiration
smeared her lips with plum rose blush
pulled a brush thru her hair
shook the red dust from her sandals
asked the canopy above her for just one chance

she left behind her 20 years of secret hopes
and secret fears of promises left undone
she walked away from tearful smiles
she dared to think her dreams could fly
she set herself towards the sun

with $10 in her pocket joni mitchell in her repertoire
the desert road before her new strings on her guitar
she hurried o'er the hard edge of a little town called vegas
tried her luck in austin texas met some folks she won't forget

she left behind her quiet ways her solitude her longing for
a warm touch too many days
she buried in her memory the comfort of a jemez breeze
and yellow honey suckle haze

she held on to her trembling heart like the river holds the rain
and looking back up the hill she knew she'd never be the same
didn't know what would find her didn't care how she'd get there
she just had to feel alive again

she hung her weathered hopes upon
the sliver of the new moon smiling
as she turned to say good-bye
she caught a blur of color waving
from the clothes line just behind her
like a prayer flag in the night

there's a lovebridge crossin over every song that spills thru her
to anyone who'd listen to her letter to the world
there's a sparkle in her tired eyes
a satisfaction in her sighs for what her hands do

now the sweetness of her mountain home
she carries in her heart & soul & pictures in her cell phone
and someday when her dreaming's done
she'll return to her beloved ones
the little bud that became a rose

Actually I'm using regular acoustic strings -- just pounding on it pretty good.  Sometimes u jus gotta do it!
