While those of us outside of Asia are still wondering when well be able to see John Woos massive, two part spectacle Red Cliff - note to the impatient: the Hong Kong DVD and BluRay releases are both fully English friendly and region free - fans of the hugely successful Part One are gearing up for the imminent release of Part Two. And helping them to do that is the freshly released first trailer.

What to expect from this one? Well, its a huge budget war film, people, and what happens at the end of wars? Fighting. Lots and lots of fighting. Which youll find in the trailer below the break.

We now have the trailer for the second of two parts of John Woo's "Red Cliff," featuring lots of battle scenes. You can also check out the trailer for the first part. The first film has already appeared in Asian theaters, but has yet to be scheduled for release in the US.

"Red Cliff" is based on Chinese history in the 2nd and 3rd Century, during which China split into three kingdoms following the fall of Han Dynasty, and after decades of war and peace, reunified under a new dynasty, Jin. It tells of a battle fought with over one million men in 208 AD. During the battle, the joint force of two warlords, Sun Quan and Liu Bei, defeated the much stronger invading army led by warlord Cao Cao. Shortly after the battle, the Han dynasty officially ended and China split to three kingdoms.

Woo is the man behind such films as "Face/Off" and "Mission: Impossible II." His new movie is said to be the most expensive film ever made in China with the budget reaching $80 million.

Red Cliff (Chinese: 赤壁), alternatively known as The Battle of Red Cliff, is a two-episode Chinese epic film based on the Battle of Red Cliffs and events during the Three Kingdoms period in Ancient China. The first episode is expected to be released in 2008. The film is directed by John Woo and stars Chang Chen, Hu Jun, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Lin Chi-ling, Zhang Fengyi and Zhao Wei. With an estimated budget of US$80 million, The Battle of Red Cliff is the most expensive Asian-financed film to date.[2]

According to Han Sanping, veteran producer and the CEO of China Film Group, one of the chief investors in the film, The Battle of Red Cliff currently has too much material to include in a single feature. It will therefore be divided into two episodes, with the first to be released before the 2008 Summer Olympics, and the second only at the end of 2008.[3] Producer Terence Chang confirmed this, saying that the Chinese government views the film as a showcase of Chinese history and wants it released before the Olympic Games.[4]

This film is one of the two Three Kingdoms films currently in production (as of 2008), the other being Daniel Lee's Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon.

In 36 BC, a Han trade expedition defeat Roman legionaries at the Battle of Sogdania. The cause of the overwhelming defeat was thought to be that the crossbows used by the Han Chinese easily penetrated through Romans' shield and armour. However, some historians considered that those Romans were POWs captured by Parthians, who later put them on the battle against the Han Chinese.

personally, i prefer the novel.

phalanx is not outdated. anti riot polices are still useing it. it simply has some flaws. the movement speed is slow. easy target for the heavy projectile weapons. flank sides are vulnerable. however, it has strong front to break enemies' rank or formation. soldiers are encouraged when they are surrounded by their own.

not always similar. han chinese simply adopted nomadic people's fighting style. two of most successful generals were wei qing and huo qu bing (uncle and nephew).
