There's alot of story to be told in this bottle of Mackinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt. A stunning recreation of the original malt, shipped to Antartica in 1907 by Shackleton to fortify his "Nimrod" expedition and discovered under his hut at cape Royd, a century later. Every Whisky is an adventure, but this one is more than most.

Spot on, man. It's as much about the Shackleton story, as it is about the whisky. Nobody's forcing anyone's hand in marketing terms, but for those of us captivated by all matters Polar, it may just be a tipple worth having, for the historical connection and a celebration of the sheer fortitude of Shackleton and his ilk...

Perhaps, back in its day this was some young, rough whisky aged in poor casks akin JW Red Label, who knows. I love how marketing has recreated this as being some heavenly spirit. I for one wouldn't pay the premium price for this.

First of all mate, I am not talking rubbish.......the sentence I quoted you was from the Single Malt distillery association............those were their words, not mine, so take your issue up with them. What you are referring to is what the Single Malt association called out in my quote as 'single/single', and again, not all single malt scotches are made that way. You and I completely disagree, but in the end, we enjoy our 'single malts', however they are made, and that is all that matters. .

There's a lot more to this, but I'm not going to go down the major explanation route - best you check this out yourself as its all part of the whisky enjoying experience! I think also, that if what you say is true, many distillers would have by now faced procecution under the Trades Decriptions Act if they were claiming their 'silk purse' was in actual fact, a 'pigs ear'.

Anyway, enjoy a dram or two this festive season, while doing a little bit more research.

    Merry Christmas, and Slainte!!

...., I used to buy when I could find it, a whisky called "As We Get It" . It was an independant bottling which is still on the go, but I haven't had it for some time. This whisky was very unique in as far as it came from a single source and in many cases, a single barrel. It was not blended with even like whisky from the same distiller. Indeed, from barrel to barrel, it was a different colour, and of course, a slightly different flavour - and as such, was part of the attraction of this spirit.

I'm sorry mate, but you are still talking rubbish. Allow me to quote as an example from the label on a bottle of 'The Balvenie' Single Barrel alt Whisky. You will find this quote on any bottle of 'Single Barrel' whisky, so feel free to go out and have a look for yourself. Quote "This Bottle is one of no more than 300 Individual Hand Numbered Bottles from a Single Cask, Each Bottle is Unique and Unrepeatable" Unquote. In addition, there are many other varieties from different distillers....,

the term SINGLE has a very precise meaning. It indicates that all of the whisky in the bottle was made in the same distillery. It is the product of a single distillery and has not been blended with whisky from any other distillery. While most bottles of single malt contain a vatting of several production runs, some are filled from a single batch. Such a whisky is sometimes identified as a “Single/Single” Scotches. This means that it is a single malt from a single barrel.

Even the single-barrel distilleries have many variations of scotch from their 'own' distillery. It is up to the master blender to create the flavor that is truest to the brands character. A better way to look at it is this. At a single malt distillery they blend their own versions to create their single malt flavor. Whereas, Johnnie Walker sources many scotches from varying distilleries, single-malt distilleries only source their own distillery.

I think you are somewhat mis-informed. How do you 'blend' a single barrel/cask malt whisky then, i.e, one which has spent its entire life in one 'container' prior to bottling?
