My New York City apartment is getting a badly needed kitchen renovation. I've torn out the old cabinets and appliances and replaced them with new cabinets, counters, refrigerator and a sink from Ikea along with a new stove, microwave range hood, and a dishwasher from Sears. I have some doors and drawers in place and it's starting to look like a kitchen again. But, there's still a lot left to do...

This wave of the project is focused on the basics and the electrical work. I wanted to dress things up with a tile backsplash, a new floor, and some under-cabinet task lighting, but it now looks like this baby will be going on the market once the kitchen is finished - we won't even get to put the dishes in the cabinets.

The delivery truck showed up just a few minutes after 8am today and dropped off the appliances. I got up a little after 6am to finish up my work of caulking cracks and priming the plaster work. When the delivery arrived, I was ready.

Slowly but surely the kitchen is taking shape. I'm very sore and tired now and that makes the detailed work of installing the cabinets even slower. But, every task completed makes a big impact on the finished product.

Next comes the opposite counter and the plumbing...

  • Well, it was interesting to check out all the videos. We're getting ready to remodel our kitchen with IKEA cabinets. It must have been difficult trying to work in such a small space. I'm guessing our Tucson kitchen alone is about the size of your NYC apartment. Of course, that means more cabinets to assemble and install. Thanks for sharing.

  • Your project should be a lot smoother. The super tight spaces added many complications - like having to install all the appliances before the cabinet work was done.

It'll take time to build the additional cabinets themselves, but hanging them will go quickly with the rail-mount system on IKEA cabinets.

    Good luck.

  • This project has been about as 'real life' as they come. The space itself was very challenging to work with and many compromises were required.

The Ikea kitchen planning tool was very helpful. My wife and I spent many hours making detailed measurements of the room and then juggling all of the components available to come up with a workable solution.

The 3d Kitchen Planning tool isn't perfect , but it was great to have a good inventory list when we went to the store to place our order.

  • it is interesting to see what you started with and the adjustments considering the kitchen space and the corners and other fixes you keep needing to do to make it work. Looks good and much more of a real life project compared to some demo vid where the space you work with is idea and unproblematic.
