Media literacy teaches us to critically analyze media messages before accepting them. Although we have been a media-driven society for many decades, most people still don't possess the skills to be active consumers of media messages. This creates a society full of passive consumers who simply accept these messages without question.
People of all ages can become media literate by learning some simple techniques to help them think critically about the media. Parents and teachers are in a unique position, as they have the opportunity to teach children how to "read the media" as they also teach them to read books.
This documentary aims to introduce its viewers to the basic concepts of media literacy, including the three core concepts of media literacy. It also helps parents and teachers understand how they can help children become active consumers of media, which will lead to them developing critical thinking skills for the future.
Writer and director Nick Pernisco interviews key people in the media literacy movement, bringing years of knowledge and experience to an idea that is so relevant and important in today's media-driven society.
Featured interviews include Tessa Jolls, CEO of the Center for Media Literacy, Elizabeth Thoman, president and founder of the Center for Media Literacy, Michael Gougis, a freelance news writer and media professor, Mathew Needleman, an elementary school teacher and founder of Video In The Classroom, Jeff Share, a media trainer for the Center for Media Literacy, and Megan Parlen, a media literacy expert.
