Daisy May
(May Erlewine)
Born into a family of musicians, May Erlewine has been playing music all her life. She learned to sing and play piano at an early age, and her acoustic guitar is seldom far from her side. Erlewine, who was home schooled, paid her singer-songwriter dues in her late teens with several years of hitchhiking back and forth across the U.S., even riding freight trains, and always writing songs and playing her music.
Now with four CDs to her name, May works a variety of venues coast to coast, focusing on the Midwest and her home state of Michigan. Her inspired songs and powerful clear voice have a sweetness that delights audiences. Daisy May is often joined by Michigan singer-songwriter Seth Bernard, whose excellent guitar work and soaring harmonies are seamlessly woven into their song-stories.

But yet again, the highlight of the night was the first performer, Daisy May. Accompanied by fellow Earthworks musician Seth Bernard, May graced the audience with a voice that rivals Patsy Cline in strength and beauty."
-Michigan Daily, 1/29/07, Review of the Ann Arbor Folk Festival 2007
With a voice that vacillates between a cowgirl lilt and a honey warble, Daisy May operates comfortably in the worlds of old-time country and Dylan-esque folk."
-Grand Rapids Magazine
"Daisy May has the sort of soul-baring voice that moves the Alan Lomaxes of the world to abandon the ivory tower for the back roads of rural America."
-Harvard Independent
"I first saw Daisy May in front of a large audience, when she opened for country star Terri Clark. Here were some 2000 country fans - big hats and all -- impatiently waiting to see the star of the show, when this cute little girl with a guitar walks out on the stage and starts to sing. And sing she did, more folk than country, but more than enough country for this audience. She stole the show. During the main act, there was a steady stream of people leaving the show to go out in the vestibule and buy this unknown singer's first CD. She sold hundreds of CDs, until there was none left. Now, much better known, and with two CDs to her credit, Daisy May is the best young singer/songwriter that I have heard since Tish Hinojosa first made the scene. Perhaps because she spent years on the road, hopping freight trains and playing on the streets, Daisy May is already a veteran songwriter, with an offer from at least one major record label to cover her songs. But she prefers to sing them herself. And this wonderful young singer sings songs that will raise the hair on the back of your neck. They are that good! Don't miss a chance to see her in person."

"Daisy May is known for her amazing voice and her refreshingly gentle and emotion-filled music. She may have been the only one on stage for her performance, but she didn't need anyone else. The stage was lit up by her talent."

Review of Daisy May's "Heart Song": "Daisy May knows a thing or two about weaving the colors of the American landscape into her music. May's third release, Heart Song isn't saturated with an excess of instrumentation, but it feels complete - and that's partly due to May's lovely singing voice. It's a voice that's classic, beautiful and ambitious; the kind that was made to tell stories."
-Ryan Hoffer A&R, Shut Eye Records, Atlanta, GA
Review of Daisy May's "Sleepless": "Patty Griffin. Emmy Lou Harris. Ani Difranco. These are names that come to mind when one hears the gorgeous voice and lyrics of May Erlewine. She's enough folk to satisfy most and enough country to satisfy the rest. It's hard to find much wrong with this singer/songwriter; her poetry is tangible, her voice and sound are more than accessible and, after all, anyone who hitchhikes from coast to coast has earned enough indie cred for a lifetime. This artist is worth it - go to erlewine.net to check it out.
