Gasp! Edita's note on 5:36! There was a discussion on another video about the size of Edita's voice, I would point out this video as evidence that she is truly a dramatic coloratura. Listen to how she cuts through everything, the orchestra, the chorus, the other singers!

One of the most famous Elisabeth was Montserrat Caballe. Anyone out there has a recording of a performance of Roberto Devereux from November 1980 at the Opera Royale de Wallonie (Liege, Belgium) with Montserrat Caballe as Elisabeth, Alicia Nafe as Sara, Carlos Montane as Roberto and Vicente Sardinero as Nottinham ?

As you would know.

Thanks again Coloraturafan. This is the first stereo posting that you did? Personally I think Edita Gruberova, Mariella Devia and Elena Mosuc are the best candidate to performe any of Donizetti 3 Queens after Beverly Sills.

coloraturfan is a benefactor of our culture. I only knew about 20 Donizetti's opera. Now, I ll extend. To answer your question : he slept but could write his operas without anythingelse than paper. Instead a lot of people saying he was a true genius of Music, maybe beacause only of this.
Grubi eat lyon that night! Gorgeous !!!

It's unbelievable and he wrote 66 operas. I've only listened to 15 over the past few years.

66 operas.....so not all of them could be "Great Music" but my God there is rarely a dull moment in any of them!! Roberto D is a particularly fine example of Donizetti's genius for exciting, taxing, tuneful and ultimately thrilling Opera......and in this case also dramatically convincing.
I think he did sleep, but only to dream up more wonderful music for us to enjoy.

yes, thank you very much for this series.
This staging is trash of course (espesially Gruberova's face), but Roberto is great. Gruberova is good, but ammmm.... not at her best))

Yes, I thought Donizetti was the champ in the volume of production. I wonder if the man ever slept.
I check every day to see what new treasures you are posting. Thank you again!

14 more Donizetti operas... and then we are on to Rossini... I am working on those right now... there are a lot!

Does he come close to matching Donizetti?

Oh no, not really, Donizetti wrote 66 operas, I think off the top of my head, and Rossini had about 40. Don't quote me on that. Of course, Rossini re-used a lot of music in his operas, more so than Donizetti.
