A scenic view of the Worlds third largest populated city,Mumbai's mangrove forests at Vashi(new Mumbai) on the Thana Creek banks. This diverse eco-system has some unique flora and fauna like "white cheek bulbuls",paradise flycatcher whose male birds tail plumage is indescribably beautiful, wild ring doves, mongooses and some diverse "Mangrove medicinal and flowering plants"to name a few. This "Mangrove Nature walk" was conducted by "Bombay Natural History society(Mumbai)" under the guidance of Nishigandha Pednekar. a real educative observation of nature within our polluted city.We spotted 4 sacred ibis, a very rare migratory bird to visit Mumbai in the mangrove creek, usually only found in "PROTECTED NATIONAL PARKS" like "Ranganthitu(Mysore)" or Keoledeo National park formerly known as Bharatpur National park(Rajasthan)".Mumbai, besides being India's commercial capital has two unique natural heritage site,1)The Sanjay Gandhi National Park and 2)The Mangrove forests eco-system on its coastline. Both of these natural wonders of Mumbai city are being gradually destroyed by "Human Encroachment" and "Forest decimation".I remember hunting birds with an air-gun in my ancestral village of Mangalore in the 1970's when forests still existed and wild-life not a rarity to my generation as was "BIG-GAME Hunting" by the Maharajah's,Nawabs and British aristocracy in the 19th and early 20th century.Today,in 2009(21st century), gradual human encroachment into forest land due to "Population Explosion and poverty" and not hunting has decimated wild-life and hope this particular 'Mangrove Forests " exist for future generations and not become memories on this "VIDEO", extinct in real life.- By Wildlife conservation and Naturalist Rudolph.A.Furtado.
