Mine Hill artist Willie Cole has made art with steam irons, blowdryers and all kinds of found objects, but since 2005, he has worked mostly with shoes. Cole is a highly regarded contemporary artist and "Stowage," his depiction of an African slave ship, is on display as part of the Newark Museum's "Unbounded" exhibition. The museum has two other works by Cole in its permanent collection, though not on display at the moment.
