NOT FINALIZED Cover of Deadhouse By Katatonia that I just recorded. I want to get some feedback about the mix, guitar tone, drum sounds, etc. Most of the guitars and vocals are from the first take since this was mostly to learn the software I have and brush up on my mixing. LEAVE COMMENTS AND BE HONEST.

iMac
Logic 8
Guitar Rig 3
Shecter Hellraiser
Crappy Yamaha Bass in Logic Bass Amp plugin
Sterling Audio ST66 Condenser
Drumkit From Hell 2 running in Kontakt 3
All above played and mixed by me alone

  • also the interlude in the middle where the whale calls would be. would like to hear a mix with that cut out and the song jumping straight back into the chorus.

  • hm, I think that would put too many choruses in a row wouldn't it? (I replied to your other post too in case you just see this one.)

Thanks again for the kind words and feedback.

  • hey man, just thought id give ya some feedback on your cover. for start whoever your vocalist is, does a better job on this then renske in my opinion. he didnt hit his straps till tonights decision. the mix sounds the tiniest bit thin in parts. sometimes it clicks and sounds great. others it is just missing a little bit of warmth i love the guitars. as a drummer though i think the bass drum is just a tiny bit too loud and should be softened ever so slightly. other than that u should be proud man

  • Hey, thanks for the detailed comment. I struggled so much with that bass drum. I think it's more the EQ than the volume, but I Have Superior Drummer 2.0 now, so I'm going to revisit it at some point with the new software. Thank you for the amazing comment about the vocals. I tried to stay true to the original as much as I could vocally but in my own style. In fact, that was my goal with the entire song. As I got into this project I realized for all it's simplicity it is still a complex track.

  • Awesome sound. Care to teach me how to do mixing so that it'll come out as good as yours? Thanks

  • Thanks, glad you liked it. Best thing I can say about mixing is read about it, talk to people who know about it, and above all, listen to recordings you like, on a good pair of speakers or headphones and really listen to what's going on with the sound. Then try to copy what you like. Also remember it will always sound different depending on what you play it on, so test it in the car, crappy computer speakers, earbuds, etc, before you finalize the mix. Good luck!
