This scene from the 1970 PBS presentation of the "Andersonville Trial" concerns the testimony of Dr. Bates - a physician who worked for 7 months in the prison sick ward - caring for prisoners. The actor is Buddy Ebsen who was still portraying Jed Clampett in the 60's T.V. sit-com "The Beverly Hillbillies". However, you will see Mr. Ebsen here in role so intense and so very different than his caricature of a denizen of Appalachia who came from "Them thar hills". The man questioning Dr. Bates is Attorney Oatis Baker who was one of the lawyers who defended Captain Wirz and was portrayed by Jack Cassidy who received an Emmy Award nomination for his role.
The cast of this production were all stellar actors, some of whom deserved better careers than they got, like Cameron Mitchell. I remember Jack Cassidy from the 60s and 70s and remember what a tragedy it was when he died in a fire. Cut off before his time.
