Nearly 335,000 man-days of production were required in building JOUETT. Over 750,000 repair parts were stored on board to permit all levels of maintenance while underway.

The gas turbine, diesel and steam generators could produce sufficient electricity to light all the homes in a city the size of Tacoma. The evaporators had the capacity to distill over 24,000 gallons of water per day.

The third JOUETT(DLG-29) was laid down 25 September 1962 by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash.; launched 30 June 1964; sponsored by Mrs. S. J. Ervin, Jr., wife of the Senator from North Carolina; and commissioned 3 December 1966,

Captain Robert S. Hayes in command.

Carrying the most modern antisubmarine detection and missile warfare gear, JOUETT joins the fleet as a ready defender of freedom. Her motto,"Eternal Vigilance," serves as a reminder of the ship's mission in war and peace. Upon completion of fitting out in February of 1967, JOUETT was assigned to Cruiser-Destroyer Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and operated out of her home Port, San Diego.

Reclassified as a guided missile cruiser, CG-29,on 30 June 1975, JOUETT was decommissioned and stricken from the Navy Register on 28 January 1994 at San Diego.

Three ships in the United States Navy have been named USS Jouett for James Edward Jouett.

* The first USS Jouett (DD-41) was a Paulding-class destroyer launched in 1912, served in World War I. She served in the United States Coast Guard from 1924 to 1930. She was sold in 1934.

* The second USS Jouett (DD-396) was a Somers-class destroyer launched in 1938, served in World War II and decommissioned in 1945.

* The third USS Jouett (DLG-29) was a Belknap-class guided missile cruiser
launched in 1964 and decommissioned in 1994.

  • @76794p E-7

  • I loved watching this. I served on the U.S.S. William V. Pratt (DDG-44) from early 1989 to its decommissioning just after Desert Storm. We didn't get to do "swim call," like the photos in this. That must've been a blast. I don't think the Navy allows sailors to do it anymore.

  • @drwinslow70 Yes the Navy like the Nation has changed drastically since my time at sea... Thanks for the shout...
