Volt0m, the ''foundation'' layer at the bottom is 1/4'' - 1/2'' stone. The ''separation'' layer is 1/8'' - 1/4'' crushed stone. These two layers are just a few inches in depth.
The bulk of the filter is in the top 18'' depth of ''filter layer''. This is screened crushed rock that is up to 1/8'' in diameter (1/8'' being the maximum).
Is there a rock crusher near you? ...or a cement plant nearby? There you can get crusher dust material and screen it to proper size.

munnabhai33, pstephey did a good job of posting it in English. See his comments below.

On my recent trip we visited Jose in the D.R. who makes and distributes filters. He took us to a pit where sand is excavated from deep pockets, well below the surface, and explained to us that this is also clean and not contaminated and acceptable for the filter sand. ''Beach'' or ''near the surface'' construction sand is not.

As rock does not contain bacteria etc..it is necessary to use crushed rock. This is the waste left over from a crusher. In Haiti the road between Dominican and Cap Haitian , Haiti, was being rebuilt so we were able to obtain ''crusher dust'' and screen it as required.
