SINGAPORE : Singapore's Changi Airport rang in 15 per cent more sales last year compared to 2009 at its shops.
The airport said its stores raked in over S$1 billion for both years.
And some of this money is going back to the shoppers. For the first time, the airport is giving S$1 million to a shopper - it's the largest cash prize ever to be given in a retail contest in Singapore, or by any airport in the world.
And that lucky shopper is 39-year-old Ivan Rantung.
"(I'll) try and clear all the debts and then secondly, I guess, probably go on a nice holiday with my family. The next thing would be to save some funds for the kids," said Rangtung, winner of the 'Be A Changi Millionaire contest'.
Rantung is an ex-MediaCorp radio deejay, whose wife is former Channel NewsAsia presenter Lisa Ang.
The millionaire contest is one way sales have been boosted at over 230 stores spread over four terminals of Singapore's Changi Airport.
Shoppers had to spend S$60 and above to qualify for the contest.
Singaporeans were the top spenders at the airport, followed by those from China, Europe, Indonesia and Australia. Perfume, cosmetics and branded goods are listed among the most popular products sold at the stores at Changi.
"We aim to become one of the world's best known airports in shopping and dining. And of course, in the local context, it's really to become an (attractive) alternative shopping destination for all Singaporeans," said Ivy Wong, director of Airside Concessions, Changi Airport Group.
The airport plans to run another millionaire contest this year, with the winner crowned in 2012.
