The native Armenian name for the country is Hayk'. The name in the Middle Ages was extended to Hayastan, by addition of Indo-European suffix -stan (land).

The Armenian people's self-designative name "Hay" can also be found in the ancient Near Eastern records of the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC.

The name Hay (Armenian), to be pronounced as "high."
Beginning in the 26th century BC, we find in the Mesopotamian inscriptions the name "Hay(a)" used as a name of a God, country and people.
We have also found inscriptions that tell us about the "sons of Haya" in the cuneiform records of Ebla (24th-23rd centuries BC, near Aleppo, Syria).
Hittite inscriptions deciphered in the 1920s by the Swiss scholar Emil Forrer, Hugo Winckler and Bedřich Hrozný testify to the existence of a mountain country, the Hayasa , lying around Lake Van.
The suffix sa of Hayasa corresponds to the stan, derivative of Hayasatan (Armenia).
Also, Tun/Tan means "Home/of Home) in Armenian which makes
Hayastan- Land of Hay.

"The similarity of the words Hayasa and Hayastan," says Prof. A. Hatch, "is so obvious that I am tempted to declare that the oldest name of Armenia has already been discovered."

  • E. Forrer, Hajasa-Azzi, "Caucasica", 1931, p. 9: P. Krechmer, Der nationate name der Armenier Haikh, 1932, N 1-7

With the discovery of Hittite monuments mentioning the country of Hayasa, Krechmer, and after him hundreds of noted and not so researchers considered the obvious connection - hay, Hayq and Hayasa.
