This is a very brief explanation of a Web Proxy and what they are generally used for.

I realize that getting around a firewall can be used for things that are not malicious in nature.

  • hey! some mcafee web gateway 7 shit just started blocking all my internet traffic and basically all the sites i wanted to load. so now i have set firefox to automaticially choose proxy settings. works again. still, not being very sure what i have just done, is it bad to set firefox that way? no proxy at all, choose proxy on my own, let firefox choose best settings for my network/provider... HELP! :/

  • @Loskene Hey, sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I'm not a big fan of macafee because of strange things that it does. As such, I'm not really sure if it blocks proxy servers. For Firefox, if you set the proxy to automatic, I'm pretty sure it will go with the system default proxy. If none is set, then it will not use a proxy, so it's the same as setting no proxy. For the time, you should be ok. Mostly proxies aren't required for safe, legal browsing :P

  • question. im looking to do this at school to view sites such as facebook, youtube, etc (not porn. lol) at school everyone has their own guest account with sites such as facebook and youtube blocked. if i used a proxy server, while signed into my account, would i still be anonymous? im looking to view those sites, without the principal or whoever knowing who is viewing the site, or that anyone is viewing it at all

  • @cclover89 Depending on your school's system, they might be able to see what you are doing on your account even if you are surfing "anonymously." They may even have a system that blocks almost all known proxies. Not to say that I condone what you are doing, but someone did want to get through a firewall, they would probably want to use a SOCKS proxy ;)

  • If the firewall is blocking the proxy you use a proxy server to get to the proxy server XD

    Nice video.

  • @Colorfusion1 Hey maybe the only server you are able to connect to is in China and you want to watch porn :P
