Basking in sunshine all year round, Darwin's enviable tropical climate fosters the city's relaxed, outdoor lifestyle. Perched on the far northern reaches of the Australian coast, it's surrounded by water on three sides, providing many great vantage points for watching the storm clouds roll in across the sea.

Darwin springs to life in 'the wet', which generally runs from late November to early March, and sees striking thunderstorms and dramatic downpours punctuate the otherwise brilliant blue skies.

While some bemoan the build up to these meteorological masterpieces, others love the rapid change in atmosphere, and the even more relaxed lifestyle that seems to come with the rains.

While westerners divide the Darwin year into two seasons -- 'the wet' and 'the dry', the land's traditional Aboriginal owners break the seasons down further to six seasons, which describe the subtle changes of the tropics best.
