After some verbs we can use a gerund or an infinitive without changing the meaning, 'begin', 'continue', 'intend', 'prefer', 'start', etc.:

When he read the note, he started laughing.
When he read the note, he started to laugh.

After some verbs we can use a gerund or an infinitive but the meaning changes, 'forget', 'mean', 'regret', 'remember', 'stop', 'try' etc.:

I stopped to read the newspaper.
I stopped reading the newspaper.
