Get Smart on Crime- Lock up the criminals we are afraid of, not those we are only mad at- Mantras from first meeting

Santa Fe "Don't get tough, get smart on crime" and "Lock up the criminals we are afraid of, not those we are only mad at" became the motivating mantras of the first committee to reform New Mexico's criminal justice system in over 40 years.

State Senator Lisa Torraco co-chaired the meeting which featured presenters from South Dakota and Texas, two states that recently reformed their criminal justice systems.

Senator Torraco said committee members want to learn from the successes and failures of those states that have already gone through the massive reform undertaking so New Mexico can be as productive as possible in its process.
