This is a video taken during the Human Powered Flight Symposium at Boeing, Seattle, in 1994. The female pilot successfully raised the copter from the floor for several seconds - but just barely. Unfortunately, an assistant managed to block my camcorder right at liftoff.

  • I was merely a spectator at the attempt. From what I recall it did take off, if you consider lifting off the ground several inches for a couple of seconds to be taking off.

  • was this an attempt at the Sikorsky flight competition?

  • @JMILLERPRODUCTION - This was a project designed for that competition, yes. The thought was that a small but strong, light female pilot would have a better chance to achieve flight than a male pilot.

  • waisted 10 seconds of my life.. thnx :D

  • the key to getting pedal powered helicopters work is advanced gearing. non eo fthese designs include gearing. maybe giroscopes also. we can do this if we all work hard

  • when sombody finally crakcs how to make a pedal powered aircraft that is efficient it will be quite a breakthrough. anybody who says it is impossible is giving up on advanced ideas and new ideas. we should get the big people involved with this like nasa

  • pedal powered helicopters is possible its just a case of finding out the correct design. its not impossible

  • WANT!

  • @puya3d Ok, as soon as you learn to spell.

  • Lance armstrong could get this from N.Y.C. to L.A. in 45 minutes with 2 passengers.

  • Why not use arms and legs?

Maybe a bicyclist and a armwrestler duo???
