1 lb pinto beans
1 diced yellow onion
2-3 cloves minced garlic
2-4 teaspoons salt
1 cup grated Monterrey Jack cheese {sub in what you have if needed, cheddar, mozzarella}
3 T. Butter {or lard}

Soak the beans by covering in water and either soaking overnight or quick soaking*

Drain Beans, and cover in fresh water

Add diced onion, garlic and salt, and return to medium heat

Simmer for a few hours, until beans are tender, making sure you add more water when needed

Once beans start to break up, help them out a little by mashing with a potato masher, and add in cheese and butter

Refried beans are now ready to serve, or you can broil them in a casserole dish with cheese on top

Enjoy!

  • I never expected to see Royalty on the net...I subbed because I'm shocked to see a Princess cooking refried beans. I never expected Royalty to post...You must be bored....

  • Rule of thumb with beans is NEVER add salt (do not even use water that comes from a water softerner) the beans wont soften no matter how many hours you cook them. Always add the salt LAST

  • I had no idea you could make your own refried beans..such a spectacular idea! I'm definately going to try that in a crock pot.

  • Looks so yummy. I love Mexican food, I'm definitely making my own refried beans now. :)

  • So yummy in taco soup.

  • Looks good!

  • What a great party idea! I would have never thought about this!

  • This would be so good with a taco salad.

  • Thanks for sharing this. I'm going to try it out soon. I'll let you know how it goes! :)

  • I've never made my own refried beans before. But everything tastes better homemade than from a can. Maybe I'll give it a shot.
