This is a simple Leonard Cohen song, but as with most of his songs it's a beautiful tune.
It originally featured on his 1969 album 'Songs From a Room'.
I hope you enjoy it.
Like a bird on the wire,
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
Like a worm on a hook,
Like a knight from some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee.
If i, if I have been unkind,
I hope that you can just let it go by.
If i, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you.

Like a baby, stillborn,
Like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me.
But I swear by this song
And by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee.
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
He said to me, you must not ask for so much.
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
She cried to me, hey, why not ask for more?

Oh like a bird on the wire,
Like a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be free.

  • Very good job - would like to play it as well as len, but being realistic I'd be well happy to play it as well as you! Good luck pal...

  • really great! You really gifted. Thank you.

  • you are a very good singer but i think fingerstyle guitar playing is much better for this song....with strumming kinda lose its spirit...:)

  • Nice work man. Thumbs up from Sweden

  • @devlin535 I think it's apsolute amazingwhatever anyone else says

  • Very nice !

  • Very nice! I saw the Robert Altman film "A Wedding" yesterday, and have been searching for the version from the film ever since (vocal and autoharp only). It seemingly does not exist anywhere, and all the other versions I found were too stylized, or with too much instrumentation. But your version is wonderfully simple and lets the song (and your voice) shine through. Thanks for posting this.

  • Great! I have been practicing this song & am particularly envious of your strumming I can't figure out how to do it even with the instructions.(I've had a hard time learning to play chords &still do not know how to strum very well). I believe you play it how L.C. played it. You also do a great job of the interim ( If I...) singing & playing which is a hard part to carry & sing not to mention changing to Bm.

Bet you would get a lot of hits if you put up an instruction video for this song.

  • hey am on fb look me up i think you are great .......
