srteet light's? or fire lanterns?

One time I was riding my bike home and saw the lanterns being set off near Torquay..I seriously thought the aliens had landed, I couldnt work out what it was and stopped in a really dangerous place going 'oh god! they're here' then one went up from just by where I'd stopped and I could see what I was, I felt like a right plonker :P hehe
