Surely NOT for performance purposes, but worth playing if only as a tribute to the great man Godowsky. Most of us mere mortals simply can't or won't tackle these pieces - the technical level is just out of this universe, so it is so nice just to hear them performed. Kudos to Hamelin for his exposition of Godowsky's fantastic genius.

1) Godowski made these etudes to push the technique to the limit. He used the Chopin etudes as the base material because it was well known and if you could play the original - its easy to learn the new because its the same music! That was the point. 2) Godowski did not make these etudes for concert performances. 'Home use only') Weird? 3) If any of the critics here can play at least one Godowski etude and make us see the emotions - they can keep posting comments. If not - back off!

I can't exactly say why but Hamelin's playing sounds emotionless to me.

I think that it's the pianists rendition rather than the actual piece.

C'est un peu facile et gratuit de dire ça sans donner plus d'explication. Il ne faut pas oublier que ce sont des études, donc des exercices... Mais il est à noter qu'il y a une très belle écriture contrapuntique. L'ambiance dégagée par ces pièces est totalement unique, les harmonies, la chaleur des sont... Dommage que la prise de sont soit pourrie car la maitrise de Hamelin est phénoménale. Je suis heureux d'être le plus grand des pervers et de me masturber en écoutant ça :D

Je m'interrogerai longtemps encore sur le mauvais goût absolu de Godowsky.

Mais, après tout,les aberrations naturelles font partie de l'évolution....toutefois, les aimer relève de la perversion.

To me, it seems clear: Chopin's musical thoughts were perfectly matched by the pianistic realization. Here, we have the same ideas with a lot of extra notes, rather obscuring the actual musical idea, without adding much.
