L'Escargot gets his revenge on Red Rum as he becomes only the second horse ever to win both a Gold Cup and a Grand National. Sadly the race is marred by the deaths of Land Lark and Beau Bob.

Whilst Red Rum's fans may find this race hard to watch, it must be remembered that L'Escargot was a great horse in his own right who richly deserved this Grand National win. The way he finished he would have made a race of it with Red Rum even if they had been on level weights and Rummy would indeed get his third National win two years later.
