The rules of engaging in social media marketing are simple.

You need to build trust
You need to serve the community
You need to add value to it
You need to protect its members
You need to respect its norms.

This video shows you how you can build your own LinkedIn groups and Facebook Apps or other social communities with viral social media marketing techniques. I use three university clubs that I own on LinkedIn. The smallest club has around 500 members, and the largest is with just over 1500.

There are 5 simple ways to increase membership:
1. Directly recruit people from your personal contacts
2. Directly recruit people from other social groups
3. Make friends with the influential people, such as the owner of other social networking groups and ask them to promote your group for you
4. Natural interest -- people who find your niche and join the group
5. Viral marketing -- Using the social networks of your members so they actually to recruit new members for you

When you create a group or fanpage, you will probably utilise the first 4. Follow these rules if you do:
• Be polite and respectful
• Be honest and open when you approach people
• Don't waste their time
• Don't abuse their trust
• Emphasize the benefits your group membership will bring to them.
• Make sure your membership provides real value to them

No miracles overnight, these methods do not bring in zillions of members, but they can help you start out with the first couple of hundred who will be very important to your growth later on.
