http://www.workswithwater.co.uk/pages/heart-health.aspx Natural ways to look after your heart health. Dr Sarah Brewer talks about cholesterol and high blood pressure and their effects on your heart. Heart disease is the UK's biggest killer and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increased by high cholesterol and high blood pressure. More information about heart health can be found at www.workswithwater.co.uk

help: cholesterol:

The UK has one of the highest average cholesterol levels in the world, making it a serious health threat. Dietary fibre helps to reduce that risk by interfering with the absorption of cholesterol from the gut. Importantly, it doesn't just reduce absorption of the pre-formed cholesterol present in the food we eat; it also reduces the re-absorption of cholesterol made in our liver. The form of soluble fibre found in the cell wall of barley grains (barley beta-glucans) is particularly effective. As well as reducing absorption of cholesterol, it is processed in the large intestines to form substances (short chain fatty-acids) that have a direct effect on the liver to reduce the amount of cholesterol we make. Daily consumption of 3g barley beta-glucans, found in help: choleserol, can lower both total and LDL-cholesterol by between 5% and 9%. This may not seem like much, but it can translate into a 10% to 27% reduction in our risk of coronary heart disease.

help: blood pressure:

New research suggests that dairy lactotripeptides are the active component in maintaining a healthy blood pressure. These peptides naturally block the action of an enzyme, called ACE, to promote blood vessel relaxation. This is the same enzyme targeted by ACE inhibitor drugs prescribed to treat hypertension. For those with high blood pressure, a product containing dairy peptides such as help: blood pressure, is a natural way to help lower blood pressure.
