  • When the sun set on the cornfields of western Ohio I could pick up WBZ out of Boston on my AM radio. They played "The Urge for Going" by Tom Rush several times each evening in the late '60s. Made me a lifelong fan of Tom and Joni.

  • Nice job musiclover - thanks for posting this. Can never hear this song enough :-)

  • Beautiful. I love Tom Rush's music. Nadine

  • @mickiej1 Thanks for reaching out, Akron. Fondly remember surfing through the AM static to listen to all of the stations you mentioned. Those deejays gave me a Masters in popular music appreciation.

  • @andyinoregon Saw your note on Tom Rush, Urge for Goin'. Grew up in Akron and we also listened to WBZ, in addition to WLS, WCFL, CKLW (of course) and WLAC (Nashville - at night), among others. This was mid to late 60s, when AM radio was still king.!

  • @UpstairsMaid Why would I waste the reader's time by repeating information that is clearly stated in the caption to this video posting?

  • @andyinoregon except urge for going was written by joni. just amend that to performed or covered by tom rush

  • Mary Black sings the best version in my opinion. its beautiful

  • The best version I ever heard was done by Dave Von Ronk live at a coffee house in NYC in the '70's gave it the pathos it deserved...

  • His commercial release of this song was so fine! Joni's version seem shrill to me, though I think Joni has the best voice and songwriting skill of anyone I can think of.
