Georg Mertens - cello & Gavin Tipping - piano.

Some years ago a student asked me for a recording of this movement. She wanted to have recording at home to get the rhythm right. I sent her to google saying there are many - every cellist has played it. She found one recording of a famous French Russian cellist I had never heard of. She sent a cheque, but after 2 years no CD had arrived, the cheque not been cashed! We found actually a few exam support recordings of a very sad quality of phrasing and expression. This inspired me to check recordings of other cello student pieces.
It seems cellists like to be heard with difficult works and we are left with hardly any recordings of good quality easier works.
I promised her to make a CD with the pieces we study in the lessons including the Breval. Her stepson - a good friend of mine, Gavin Tipping - was volunteering to be the accompanier.
I hope this recording will inspire students to play student pieces with the feeling to have already arrived somewhere, gems of the music literature.
This movement is a Grade 4 AMEB exam piece.

Recorded at the launch of the CD " Cello Favourites".
More videos from the CD "Cello Favourites" on the same channel:
Handel - Aria
Dalla Bella - Giga
J.S. Bach - Suite No I - G major, Prelude & Courante
J.S. Bach - Arioso
Popper - Happy (Fond) Recollections
G. Marie - La Cinquantaine
Tschaikovsky - Valse Sentimental
B. Romberg - Sonata e minor, Allegro non troppo

Recorded in the 1870's Gulgong 'Prince of Wales' Opera House (NSW Australia) on 6th Dec 2008, a beautiful olden times venue in a tiny little town equipped with a Steinway Grand piano.

Apart from giving concerts Georg Mertens teaches cello and Classical guitar in Katoomba / Blue Mountains.

  • my teacher got me stuck in this easy piece because he says my bow movements aren't "good" he interrupts in the first chords because I play the three chords left to right and he wants me to play one chord from left to right the other from right to left and the last one left to right. is that as important as he says? it's really frustrating to play the chords over and over again just because my bow movement aren't "good enough" even though my tuning and slurring and stacattos are almost excellent

  • @parodycreator25 Hi, I just think, your teacher wants you to practice that bowing (You can play it either way). The main thing with the chords is, the bass notes are played heavier with slow movement, the high notes lighter and faster. Whatever bow directions, it makes it sound good. Cheers G.

  • Thumbs up if your 15 or younger and can play this =)

  • How pathetic that most of the comments are so competive, "I can play this better" "this is so easy" "I learned this when I was 5" "I was in the womb when I first performed this".

I doubt anyone actually derives any joy from music who is always thinking like this.

  • @HandlessClown Age deoesn't matter, it's all about the music. I can guarantee you there are some old guys out there playing Cello, they may play it well, but i guarantee you there are young musicians out there that can play it just as well if not better. Why? Because they've got the passion.

  • @HandlessClown Im agree with you... thats the diference about a musician and a player...

  • @KAKAWANGWA Well said lol they sound like pretentious assholes. Beautiful music is beautiful music at any age. THIS GUY DEFINITELY ISN'T 15 OR YOUNGER, and he's enjoying it!

  • @CelloMusic4ever You could be 15 or younger and play this but I can make you sure that you're not going to play it like a older person.

  • @parodycreator25.. Your teacher always knows best, follow his/her directions and you will be surprised at what difference it makes.

  • @CelloMusic4ever i'm only ten

  • @BenRikhoff If you choose to go on in music (and given what I saw on your video, I wouldn't recommend it) prepare to be crucified. Learn some humility, and perhaps you will have a chance.

@georgcello What a joy to hear a nicely performed version of this simple beginner piece -- and played with such love.
