@inkey2 Both. You can, for instance, show them an apple and say "apple", and when the bird wants on it'll say "apple." if you repeat a phrase a lot, though, it'll probably say it a lot, too.

so how does it work with parrots?.......will they pick up phrases from just being near people or do you have to work with them to get them to talk?

I let MJ out most days & he likes just sitting on his cage door, chillin. He'll crawl around on his cage & play, too (I have toys on the outside, also). He gets very scared/nervous away from his house, but since my health has finally improved, I've been taking him away from his cage every few days & hold him while we watch tv or play on a table. He's slowly getting less afraid of being away from his cage. He asks me to rock him on the chair now. :)
