On 25 October, Muslim Magometovich Magomaev, one of the most loved Russian pop and opera singers died. There is no Russian alive who has not heard his artistry and loves it.

I did not wish to make a "sad" tribute to Muslim Magometovich, for it would not be what he would wish. This song is in honour of our Russian sportsmen and coaches. It is the sort of positive message that he always sent. He was never a distant celebrity or a disconsolate brooder. Let us do the same.

God give you rest, Muslim Magometovich, you enriched our lives so much.

Spare a prayer for the soul of a great man today, if you would.

  • This video helps to show that Russia's sportive glory didn't die with the Soviet Union.

I particularly appreciated the mention of Guus Hiddink and his fantastic team, especially the great scorer Roman Pavlyuchenko. Their campaign at UEFA EURO 2008really thrilled me, and I hope they keep doing good 'till South Africa.

    Brazilian salutes!

My feelings for Magomaev. May he rest in eternal peace.

  • How could I avoid the fantastic Russian footballers? As for Guus, a friend of mine is a priest in Russia, and he has baptised two little boys "Guus" already! He's a big Spartak fan himself, and didn't mind in the least! Should I mention that moliebens were held all over Russia for the footballers and for the Olympians. Need I say that they were well attended?

Russian sport lives! Glory to our sportsmen. May God bless them all.
