It is based on the story of dr faustus whom made a pact with the devil for knowledge and power in exchange for his soul.After 24 years Mephistopholes-the agent of the devil-comes to collect his soul. The writer may have wished for a woman(or man) as this is also true in the story of Dr. Faustus whom asked for a wife and got a wife.At the end of the song, you get the strong feeling that the writer does not want to leave,but has no choice('cause his soul is collected by the devil).Think about it!
