From high above the Newport Pier (built in 1936 & still suffering damage from 2005 Hurricane Katrina & Hurricane Wilma), Bud Light wins easily and takes early victory lap. Average speed of the win was 111.80 mph in the Offshore Super Series Powerboat Race held of the coast of Sunny Isles Beach. Relevant figures to the origins of powerboating: Myer Lansky, Wolfie Cohen (though the Rascal House was closed earlier in 2008) & legendary powerboat firm founder, Don Aronow. Incidentally, Spike was born the year of the City's incorporation & enjoyed the race (if not slightly agitated when denied some sweet tea - his pulmonary condition is progressing unfortunately). Growing up in the 1970s we remember well "Thunderboat Alley" - to the west of the City in what is now known as Aventura. Home to Magnum Marine, Donzi Marine, Cigarette, Apache, Formula, et al. some of the finest racing boats ever made launched in these waters. Though the plans for "Interama" gave way to the private development of others, this section of northeastern Dade County is filled with quite an interesting history. "Monkey Business" anyone?
