My Hybrid Made Me Gay

Director Statement:
This short addresses issues of consumer culture, consumer identity, and cultural signifiers attributed to inanimate consumer products. I was particularly fascinated by the notion that the Hybrid automobile was a gay car, or anyone driving one could be perceived as gay. (Whatever gay means.) The short is also a voyeuristic poem. We are allowed to fetishize and eroticize the straight mans mess, his bare feet, his obsession with sports, as well as the automobile itself. Interestingly the man becomes less of a sexual object once he has turned gay; with the help of gay bumperstickers and automotive paraphernalia, gay becomes reduced to a consumer statement.
