in defence of Marie Antoinette, the expenditure of the royal family/ the king and queen only encounterd for a very small amount of Frances debt. France was not in a fiscal crisis because of Marie's "lavishing" in expensive things it was in great debt because it had borrowed what it did not have and funded the many wars it was involved in. I believe people simply just did not like the queen because she was seen as an Austrian enemy.
