George McGovern just never had a chance back in '72..Kind of an anomaly, though-- a very left-of-center record on the domestic side...and being from S. Dakota. Still--he bucked the unions on S. Dakota's right-to-work laws--he supported them. I recall AFL-CIO head George Meany blasting him over that.. As for Obama--forget that--most left-leaning voting record in the Senate; then he selects Biden--someone with the 34d most liberal record. Yeah, they'll capture the center!!
George McGovern: the greatest president we never had. And still don't have. Obama is hardly another McGovern, no matter what the Obamoids delude themselves into thinking.
In a normal election year McGovern would have been directly competitive with Nixon. 1972 was anything but. McGovern was sabotaged at the Democratic convention by his rivals, particularly Hubert Humphrey. Then he flubbed his vice presidential choice, partly because of how his options narrowed at the convention. When Eagleton's mental illness revelations came out, McGovern then aggravated it by flip-flopping, first standing by him, then dumping him. Sad way for a good candidate to tank.
the problem is that blue-collar working class whites are by and large insecure people afraid of intelligence, excellence and anything to different. they need to hear america is #1 in everything--meanwhile they elect rich right-wingers who screw them each time.
The big mistake. That was G.S. McGorvern for the Democrats in 1972. Popular by the left wing of the Democrats. But not by the mainstream voters! The candidate who wins the majority of the mainstream votes wins the elections. McGovern lost big time! The wrong candidate for president! But a honest and nice man!
