The freedom and careers of journalists have come at a great cost with a constant battle in the independent media to tell fair stories occurring in Zimbabwe. It was very important for me to travel to Zimbabwe during the celebration of their independence on April 18. Thousands of supporters came to a stadium inside Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe, to dance and sing in honor of the man that gave them their independence, their hero President Robert Mugabe. However, many of these supporters lost much of their independence in 2002 when a new law was passed. In 2002, the government passed the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act to punish any journalist or organization that speaks ill of the government and its policies. The law also requires all media outlets to be licensed under this law and registered as an accredited journalist. This law has led to many detentions and arrests of journalists as well as the closing of many newspapers. In the following story, 'Lost Voices', you will hear from journalists and human rights activists that have been faced with the consequences of this law as they continue to fight for freedom of expression inside Zimbabwe.

  • Actually, I'm a white Brit and I support Mugabe. I've never even been to Zimbabwe. I accept that people are starving and going through hell, but I don't think you have to live there to know the CAUSE of this.

In reality, there are many causes to this crisis, and I think it's sad people aren't willing to open their minds to other opinions. MDC-T supporters think that WE are the stubborn, deluded ones. Well, I suppose nothing will ever be achieved in this world.

  • nirbija,...are you a black african man living in turkmenistan???... just wondering how that happened.

  • nirbija - us colonialist whites have gone!! fool! uncle Bob is doing the job for us! he is killing more blacks than we had bullets! we love him! the longer Bob is in power the better!! long live Mugabe!!he is the best thing since Ian Smith! chuckle! who gives a shit about Zim - as long as Bob kills as many as he can - we're happy!!

  • You know what will happen when Mugabe finally goes. White farmers will be invited back. Just like they were in Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Nigeria etc.

It's not about black vs white it's about putting the resource in the hands of those skilled enough to use it. I find it starnge that African's would rather starve than have whites in their country. If you want weathly black farmers invest in agricultural education. Land is worthless if you don't know how to farm it.

    Think forward Africa.
