Hate on Johnny if you will, but he's still an extremely talented actor. Probably one of my favorites. I've never seen the original of this movie, so I can't compare the two... But I really DO enjoy when he plays the crazy guy.

@FreePadz I didn't use to like Depp as an actor, but he's grown on me a lot lately. I don't think this is a bad performance exactly, just an extremely unlikable interpretation, and deliberately so. But huge respect to him for doing it his way and not trying to rip off Gene Wilder.

Tim Burton is awful though. Hugely overrated.
