  • A good version surely, but Ella's off Clap Hands Here Comes Charley destroys any version by O'Day I've heard. Ella's timbre, phrasing, and vibrato are unmatched. Many here speak of Anita O'Day's beauty. Well, Ella was no beauty; no high cheekbones or perfect nose. Vocally however, no competition.

  • @shellyboy9 You can´t compare vibrato because Anita does not has any or a different aproach to it. You can compare Ella in technique with singers of similar aproach or tecnique (Sarah Vaughan e.g.). That's why in strict sense and logic comparing Ella and Anita is pure nonsense. I like Ella very much. I think and is subjective that Anita by far has a more exact sense of rythm but this is IMO.

  • Truly a great jazz singer but I still take June Christy.

  • @twilson11208 June Christy is not in the same league, Truth is that she was a grat singer, but Anita can scat, can swing, sing ballads and had the most pefect timing, perfect pitch and tasteful styling of every tune she sings

  • @jburidan She's beautiful in every way. Those eyes, high checkbones, the lovely nose, the slight overbite, and engaging smile all may be subjective but to me are undeniable. But it is her vocal styling and physical expressiveness that captivate even today. And nobody could ever match her breakneck speed and phrasing on fast tunes, while the ballads simply stun the soul. Anita is to be enjoyed for the ages, a giant of Jazz.

  • @jburidan Interesting. Because Ms. O'Day (who does use vibrato) has a poor vibrato in comparison, it's ludicrous to compare two jazz singers singing the same song. Okay, even though your response is illogical, how about purity of timbre, pitch control, range, scat ability, breathe control or any other vocal factor you can name. Are these irrelevant simply because you like O'Day more.

  • I never heard Anita O'Day, just heard about her. I plan to play this song in a jazz group and wanted to hear it first by a singer, to get a more melodic idea of it. Wow ! I instantly fell in love with Anita.... No pyrotechnics or showing off, but tons of control, taste, nuances, and even more personality, beauty and elegance. A huge talent. I plan to really start listening to her now. Thanks a lot from bringing this jewel to us, who were raised looking at mediocrity at best.

  • Anita, I love you.

  • @twilson11208 I have long appreciated June Christy myself, but I agree w/ Jburidan's comments about Miss O'Day. Even though Anita had her her low points, there's no denying that she had more talent than anyone of the present era, one (unfortunately) I am part of. How I wish I'd been alive to have seen her perform at her zenith, along w/ all of the many other artists who have come and gone; those who shall forever remain immortal with the bodies of work they have left behind for us to enjoy.

  • Stella By Starlight

  • shit quality.

  • @alexjrmarino It's not sad. You are who you are. I share this with those who are having a birthday. They who are, I am thinking of. A subtle point into their own collective lives as a gift that they may have never experienced if it wasn't for introductions. :)
