This Habitat for Humanity "deconstruction" video demonstrates an efficient and safe method for removing an overhead garage door (either single- or double-wide.) and the electric opener. The required tools are: one (or two) short step ladders, a socket wrench set, (and maybe an end wrench wrench set), and screwdriver(s). We also recommend wearing gloves to protect from any possible sharp edges, and to avoid the dirty grease which is always on the chain (or screw) of the opener.

The primary safety issues are: 1) risk of injury due to lifting / falling; 2) stored-energy of large springs.

The average time to remove a garage door (with a two-man crew) is 20-25 minutes.

  • @osuizbadazzx24 What, specifically, was unsafe about any of that? And in what manner would you speculate a professional would have performed the task differently?

  • Wow you call that safe way of doing it? Lol I think that would get a lot of people hurt faster than helping them it is always best to have a professional do it and do it right..

  • This video proved to be very helpful and facilitated the removal of my garage door with a method that I believe to be more safe and time efficient than any other.
