A watch-and-learn way to paint some planets. I'm not good with giving directions, but if you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

FAQ:
Q. What kind of paint do I use?
A: I use mainly Krylon, though I sometimes use metallic Rust-Oleum(a little more expensive, but it's pretty.)

Q: What am I painting on?
A: Glossy white posterboard. I like to use glossed foam board, but that stuff is really expensive...

Q: What is the fire for?
A: GLAMOUR. Nah, it actually dries the layer faster than just letting it sit, and also causes it to stick better.

Q: Do you ever get... You know, high?
A: Nope! I usually wear a protective dust mask or bandanna over my nose and mouth to keep from inhaling the fumes. The few times that I've forgotten, though, I've ended up really, really sick. Always use protection, kids!

That was a metal lid for an old coffee can, I believe.

I usually used Carolina Pad brand glossy poster board. It's cheap and relatively easy to work with. However, a preferred to work with foam core board, as it's much more sturdy and easier to mount and frame. The thing with foam core, though, is that the inside foam will dissolve from the spray paint, so you have to be careful when painting edges. It's also a bit harder to cut.

is lighting the fresh paint on fire an important step, or would it work the same without that step?

It would take a bit longer to dry, and also lighting it can give the paint a smokey effect on lighter paint colors- but you can't really see it in this video.
