  • Thanks for this video (even though its over 2 years old).

I was looking into SSD now that the prices have come down and was wondering why a 32gb SLC cost just as much as a 120gb MLC.

Now I'm wondering if I should even bother with an SSD at all until the SLC prices come down even more.

  • @surgeyX Yes, it is. Very true. There is no way around it dude, it's the way it's designed. It degrades anywhere from 7-10x faster depending on quality of the chips. These guys spend millions of dollars designing, leasing and selling enterprise systems for high traffic, high priority clients. They don't fuck around and they don't just make guesses as to the reliability of their storage. SLC is the only way to go for long term, high performance solid state enterprise servers. Yes, even today.

  • but the price of SLC memory today.....£1K for 256Gb!

  • very good! thx!

    thumbs up :D

  • I guess there have been some advancements in MLC since this presentation was made because the intel X-25 M's can read JUST as fast as their SLC cousins -- the write speeds are slower though. As far as the "degradation" thing -- I don't think that's true.

  • great info!
